Information Infrastructures are large distributed information systems that are not owned or controlled by a single organisation. They are made up of social and technical components, interconnected in networks, distributed over large areas, are shared by a community of users, provide support for certain tasks and applications, and have been evolving from an initial base. If the central axis of these infrastructures are geographic information resources, or resources that can be linked to a specific geographic domain, we are dealing with geographically based information infrastructures. The challenges of this kind of infrastructures are derived from the nature of complexity and volume of geographic information.
