The next Avicenna Alliance Members Webinar is planned for 3 October 2023 at 5pm CET
Title: "Patient-specific models for pre-operative planning and in silico trials: application to aortic pathologies” by Francesco Migliavacca from Politecnico Milano
This initiative is available to all Avicenna Alliance and VPHi members ONLY.
Abstract
Computer simulation are increasingly used as technology to represent and predict well-defined quantitative clinical endpoints. Credibility of the model needs to be assessed by verification and validation processes: this task is now required as mandatory to prove the usefulness of a model. This webinar will illustrate how in the treatment of aortic pathologies like aneurysms and dissections a workflow including mechanical characterization of implantable medical devices can be approached before running complex fluid-structure interaction simulations. Two uses of a clinical procedure related to the implantation of a stent-graft in the thoracic aorta will be illustrated: patient-specific pre-planning procedural implantation and definition of an in silico trials.
Short Bio
Francesco Migliavacca obtained a MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1992 and a PhD in Bioengineering in 1997 both from Politecnico di Milano. In 2000 he worked as a Research Assistant at the Cardiothoracic Unit of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London in 1994 and 1997-99. At present he is Full Professor of Bioengineering and Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering ‘Giulio Natta’ of Politecnico di Milano. He has been the Director of the Laboratory of Biological Structure Mechanics (LaBS) of the Politecnico di Milano. He has been Research Affiliate at the Medical Engineering and Science (IMES), Center for Biomedical Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA. His major research activities have included the fluid dynamic optimization of pediatric cardiac surgery procedures, fluid dynamics in the living systems as well as structural analysis and material behavior of biomedical devices, in particular intravascular stents, percutaneous cardiac valves and stent-retrievers. He is and has been involved in funded researches from the European Commission, the Foundation Leducq and public and private Italian National programs. He received the medal 'Le Scienze 2001' in Engineering and was awarded the European Society of Biomechanics Perren Award in 2004. He is Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed journals ‘Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology’. He has been the Chair of the 26th European Society of Biomechanics Congress in 2021.
