1. BIC's "European Bioeconomy in Figures" report published
It shows the turnover of the entire bioeconomy including food and beverages and the primary sectors of agriculture and forestry, was 2.35 trillion euros in 2021. In addition, Europe’s bio-based industries accounted for 725 billion euros of the 2.35 trillion euros bioeconomy turnover in 2021 – a share of more than 31%.
Interestingly, the report covers the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and you can see some of the effects that it had on the bioeconomy during this time period.
"European Bioeconomy in Figures: 2008-2021" is available on the BIC website.
2. BIC mini-report on AI in the bio-based industries
Following a webinar exclusively for BIC members in May, we have produced a short round-up that highlights some of the current uses for artificial intelligence in the bio-based industries. Read it here.

Defining blue skills and related competency requirements.
-
Analysing current and future skills needs in the blue economy.
-
Mapping the current offer of blue economy education and training in the EU.
-
Reviewing EU-funded initiatives on blue skills.
-
Developing recommendations for addressing identified skills gaps.
To find out more about the survey, you can contact Flavia Cavaliere from the study team.
