The Group of New Technologies in Vehicles and Road Security is officially registered as Applied Quality Research Group (Grupo Consolidado de Investigación Aplicada) by the Regional Government of Aragón (Gobierno de Aragón). Besides its research activity described down these lines, VEHIVIAL is directly involved in teaching activities at the Higher Polytechnic Engineering School (Centro Politécnico Superior, CPS) and the Universitary School for Technical Industrial Engineers (Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica Industrial, EUITI) and participates in the departmental Doctoral Program in New Technologies in the Automotive Engineering.

The members of VEHIVIAL participate in many activities and forums, including R&D projects, scientific conferences, courses and seminars. Finally, VEHIVIAL is also deeply involved in promoting collaborations and coordinated projects with other research groups and departments, and national, European and international networks.

Cadaver or Post Mortem Human Subject (PMHS) testing has been essential in the amelioration of injuries and fatalities related to traffic accidents. In 1995, it was estimated that per every PMHS used in crash injury research, 60 lives were saved and countless injuries prevented.

The project BIO-ADVANCE is intended to develop and implement a permanent research program involving human cadaver testing at the University of Zaragoza while investigating on the fully characterization of the kinematics of the human spine in pure frontal and oblique impacts. The results of the project will be twofold. First, it is expected that the host institution (I3A-University of Zaragoza) will be capable of performing six fully instrumented PMHS sled tests at the end of the project. The possibility of performing such tests will strengthen and expand the research capacities of the University of Zaragoza at world level. And second, these experiments will contribute to characterize the 6-degree-of-freedom (6-dof) motion of the human spine during frontal and oblique impacts, augmenting current knowledge on the subject.

The general objective of this project is to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by road traffic accidents to vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists and passengers through the development of a smart road restraint system.This smart restraint system shall: reduce the number of accidents through better information on the actual state of the road and traffic flow, eliminate dangerous profiles from road restraint systems (crash barriers) that currently endanger vulnerable road users, and optimize road safety by providing exact information of where and when accidents happen in real-time. This project has been focussed on the development of a methodology to improve, shorten and reduce the costs associated to the design process of buses and semi-trailers. These are probably the vehicle categories with the higher innovative technological potential for the Spanish industry. Moreover, its is very important to improve their energy efficiency and to reduce their impact over the environment, particularly in those vehicles called to assure a sustainable urban mobility of passengers.
